Treatment

Blurb
A homeless girls fight for survival on the streets

Character Bio
Ella Quinn (principle character) is a 17 year old girl from Southend. She was a good pupil in school, with above average grades. Ella was very quiet and often spent time on her own. Her parents split up when she was very young, she lives with her mum who she doesn’t have a good relationship with, often arguing as she never listens to Ella. Her grades deteriorate as her relationship with her mum gets worse and worse and she ends up dropping out of school. After an extreme argument with her mum, Ella decides she cant take it anymore. She packed a small bad including only £30 of savings and runs away. Being unable to afford a place and get a job because of her circumstances she ends up sleeping around, stealing and busking for money. She occasionally finds a bed for the night but more often ends up sleeping rough. She hasn’t had any communication with her friends or family since she ran away and is finding life harder on the street than she thought.

Sally Quinn (Secondary character) is a 44 year old divorced mum from Southend. She married her husband when she was 25, had Ella when she was 28 and split up with her husband when she was 32. She raised Ella all by herself with no financial or social support  but has come depressed though working long shifts and started drinking. She has a very poor relationship with her teenage daughter and rarely see’s her. Ella is always arguing with her but Sally is often too intoxicated to be aware of the conversation. One day Sally discovered that Ella has runaway. It takes her over a week to tell the police because she is scared of being deemed and unfit mother. When she finally contacts the police she also discovers that Ella has dropped out of school. The police hold a search for Ella in the surrounding areas but they’ve had no sight or contact with her. Sally has been drinking more and more, forced to quit her job and is still waiting for her only daughter to come home

Jay Harper (Secondary character) is a 42 year old man from Southend. He has never married or had kids, he works in a factory on minium wage and often goes out drinking. On one night out he bumps into a vulnerable girl, he offers her money to take her back to his. He doesn’t remember much of the night but wakes up in an empty bed in the morning to discover the girl from the night before has stolen his phone, watch and money and dissapeard.

Adam John (Secondary character) is a 22 year old man from Southend. Adam has always been in the wrong crowd at school and gotten trouble with the police before. He often steals for quick money fixes. One night he is walking along the road to find a girl asleep on a bench, he spots a guitar beneath her and quickly picks it up and walks off with it.

Statement of Intent
The main purpose of our short film is to raise awareness about the severity of homeless people, especially young people. We were in London one day and saw a homeless girl streets begging for money. She was around the same age as us and it had a real effect on us seeing someone our age in those conditions. We didn't expect to see someone a young as that, we hear about older people on the streets every day but not teenagers so we knew it was something that more people needed to know about. We think we are the right people to make this film because we are younger so more able to put ourselves in the position of teenage runaways to give the film a more realistic effect. It is important that although it is fictional to still make believable so we can raise awareness

Storyline
Ella is shouting and shouting at her mum as she sits there blankly. She screams at her saying that she's leaving and her mum still sits their, emotionless. Walking out of the room, she turns back one last time then exits, her mum looks up as an empty doorway. Ella is in her room, furiously packing items into a rucksack. She grabs her guitar and walks out of the house. Heading down towards the beach she sits down under the pier, keeping warm under blanket and sleeps there over night. For a few days she wanders round the local town, trying to find sheltered places to sleep in or even a sofa or the night. She decides to busk for a day and earns a bit of money to get her a hot meal. She goes to sleep that night on a bench with her guitar underneath her, when she wakes up in the morning it is missing and she feels that all the progress she made yesterday has gone and she's giving up hope. Over the next few weeks she sleeps rough, sometimes finding a sofa to sleep for the night. One days she's walking down the arcade, seeing all the bright lights gives her aspirations of what her life could be. She bumps into a man who offers her money to take her home, desperate, she accepts. When she wakes up in the morning she quietly packs her bag, stuffing in money she's found on the side and digs through draws finding a watch and phone, she leaves before the man in the bed wakes up. *

LOCATION REPORTS - 10 week movie "Runaway"

By Paige Archer

After Effects 3D Tracker

To make this 3D tracker, we dragged our footage into a new composition, we changed the workspace to motion tracker and added a 'Track Camera' Tracker.

We then added tracking text, made it 3D using the 3D effect box, duplicated it and added a 'Fast Blur' to the duplicated text to give it a 3D effect.

Actors: Molly Noble,

Location: Southend Pier, Southend-on-Sea
Scene: Girl wakes up, cold and lonely under the pier.
Actors: Molly Noble

Location: Southend High Street, Southend-on-Sea
Scene: Busking
Actors: Molly Noble

Overview: This shoot went very well. We were lucky with the weather to have the same dull grey as before but less rain and wind so the conditions were easier to shoot in. Our favourite scene was the third location because we got to talk to the public and got to participate in filming. The only problems we had was getting the contunity right with the first location because we had filmed their previously in the night so needed to ensure everything was the same for the morning, this required us to look back on previously filmed footage

Remake Podcast Notes

What country and era each version made in and what impact this might have on each of the way the versions where made.
·       Anthony Zimmer – France 2005
·       Tourist – USA 2010
·       As these era’s were quite close to each other, this would give very little impact on how technically different they are. For example the technology, social and political issues and celebrities would be fairly similar. The main impact on the way each version was made was the country; As France isn’t as prominent in the film industry for popular films, they were already at a disadvantage.

What the budgets were of each version and how this might impact production.
·       Anthony Zimmer 11.16 million ($15.11 million)
·       Tourist $100 million
·       This would’ve had a huge impact on the production, The tourist had over 6 times as much budget so they can produce a better quality film, with superior crew and cast compared to Anthony Zimmer.

Are the intended audiences for each version the same?
·       Anthony Zimmer – 30-50 mixed
·       Tourist – 18-40 women
·       Anthony Zimmer has a slightly older target audience, this is due to the context, being more suited to and older audience and the actors that aren’t as mainstream as the actors from the tourist which younger people have grown up with and may aspire to be. The tourist also focuses more on the love story as well as the action to gain a younger, wider target audience. This romance aspect also is more targeted at women
Were there any other successful films that made have had an impact on the production of this remake?
·       There weren’t too many films that would have had a big effect on Anthony Zimmy because it was a pretty small production, however there were a few films such a the kings speech, The chronicles of Narnia and Black swan which were realeased at similar times as The Tourist, making these in competition for sales. Also Harry Potter and the Deathly Harrows was released a few weeks before and still would be a huge Christmas hit, impacting the box of sale of the Tourist.

What social or political issues were going on at the time of each version?
·       Anthony Zimmer – State of emergency in lower suburbs
·       Tourist – Unemployment
·       Around the time these films were released, both countries were going through various financial issues, this makes selling a film harder because people are buying and going to see films as much as they have less disposable income.

Were the reasons for the remake artistic or financial?
·       The orginal was already quite artistic, coming from the French film industry who are more interested in the artistic aspect from the financial, the US knew that they would struggle to compete with the Artistic nature of the French so the main reason was financial. Casting famous well known actors was a clear sign that they had money and wanted to make money.

How was each version marketed?
·       Anthony Zimmer - Studio Canal
·       Tourist – Columbia Picture, Spyglass Entertainment
·       Anthony Zimmer was marketed by one French studio where as the Tourist was marketed through 2 large American companies. Anothny Zimmer was first marketed in france through the typical low budget films such as online marketing and a some poster. The tourist has a larger marketing campaign through the US and the UK, with tv trailers, city billboards and other similar conventions.

How did production and distribution technology impact on the production of each version?
·       Anthony Zimmer – lower technology, big impact
·       Tourist – better technology, smaller impact
·       Having poorer production and distribution technology would have a greater impact on the production because they didn’t have the financial aid to use as greater tech and a higher budget film would

How was news of the remake/reboot received by modern audiences?
·       Quite a lot of people were actually unaware that the tourist was a remake and if they knew it was a remake they probably hadn’t watched Anthony Zimmer. Without comparing it to the original, the general public received it fairly poorly with the slow paces storylines with famous stars Jolie and Depp who played a relatively ‘normal, boring character’ receiving only 42% on rotten tomatoes. From critics it was even poorly received at 20% calling it a ‘Predictable Hollywood flop’

How did modern audiences respond to the new version once it had been released?

·       People who had heard and watch Anothny Zimmer were highly anticipating the remake, it received 63% on rotton tomatoes which is fairly high. The audience were looking forward to a bigger budget, more Hollywood style film with stars, however the poor adaptation of the storyline left the audience disappointed with the remake
