SOUNDTRACK PRODUCTION - 10 week movie "Runaway"

Our single camera production is about a homeless girls'survival on the streets, rather than making a normal short film with dialogue we decided to test ourselves and produce a silent film. As this is a subject that needs awareness and has a lot of emotion attatched to it, we knew we could use sound creatively and effetively to display these emotions.

We have chosen to add a non-diegetic backing track which runs almost entirely throughout the film to set the mood and give it ambience. We have cut, looped and dipped it in parts so that it fits in with each scene. This track is called Untitled 3 by Sigur Ros (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeuvegBZFuM) It fits the mood we were trying to achieve perfectly but was shorter than our desired length. We cut it at a certain point and looped it in reverese as we wanted to give it a proffesional look and didnt want it to suddenly cut out then start again. We were also careful that by making a silent film with a backing track that we didnt want it to look like a music video or take the easy option by using the track as it is so we carefully edited it.

The first scene in the short is a girl having an argument with her mum, argument scenes are usually hard to make tracks for because of the emotion has to display to the audience. Especially as ours has no dialogue sound, we knew we had to decide this carefully, at first we though we might have a more heavier, more upbeat, fierce song to mirror the emotion but instead we decided that our original track had a really good effect because we loved the way it contrasted with the visuals.

When filming we recorded a variety of fowley diegetic sounds such as cars passing, wind and footsteps. We also used sounds from SoundTrack Pro such as doors shutting, breathing and coughing which required a more professional sound. We also have titles throughout displaying the day and emotion so when each title appeared we wanted a non-diegetic sound for added effect. We chose a sound called ‘Auto door garage’ in Soundtrack pro and repeated it twice for these titles. For one particular scene we wanted to have drum and bass style music that sounded like it was coming from another room. We found a track from youtube and imported it into SoundTrack Pro where we added distortion and reverb layers to make it sound like it was coming from another room.
